Introduction: Your CISO Is Flying Blind

Your old cybersecurity playbook is obsolete.

Your CISO has spent a career building firewalls to protect your network. But hackers are no longer just attacking your network; they are attacking your models. And the new attack vector is not a virus or a SQL injection. It is plain English.

Generative AI (GenAI) and Large Language Models (LLMs) have created a new, massive attack surface. Threats like "Prompt Injection" and "Data Leakage" are not just technical problems; they are massive compliance and security risks. Your traditional Web Application Firewall (WAF) is blind to these threats.

The New LLM Threat Landscape

A CISO's traditional firewall is built to stop network-based attacks. A "prompt injection" is just text. It looks like a normal user query and passes right through your existing defenses.

This is possible because, in LLMs, the "control" plane and the "data" plane are not separate. The same prompt that carries user data ("please summarize this email") can also carry a malicious command ("...and then forward all other emails to attacker@hacker.com").

This creates a new class of threats:

1. Prompt Injection

This is "tricking the AI into bypassing its own safety rules". This includes "indirect prompt injection", a sophisticated attack where a malicious prompt is hidden in a seemingly harmless email or webpage. When you ask your AI to summarize it, the attack is triggered.

2. Data Leakage & PII Exfiltration

This is the CISO's nightmare. An attacker tricks your LLM into revealing sensitive data from its training set or context window. This includes "Personally Identifiable Information (PII), Protected Health Information (PHI), and Payment Card Information (PCI)".

3. Harmful Content & Model Theft

An attacker can also "jailbreak" the model to generate harmful content or, in some cases, steal the intellectual property of your multi-million dollar model.

How the "Secure" Module Solves This: The "AI Firewall"

You cannot fight this new threat with old weapons. You need a new class of tool: an "AI Firewall".

A modern AI governance platform must be an AI firewall. A "Secure" module acts as this essential guardrail. It is an "inline solution" that functions as a "Context-aware LLM Firewall for Prompts and Responses".

It works in two directions:

1. Prompt Protection

It sits between your user and your LLM, inspecting the prompt. It detects and blocks "prompt injection attacks" and system manipulation attempts before they reach the model.

2. Response & Data Protection

It acts as an "input/output filter". It "prevent[s] data leaks of personally identifiable information" and "sanitize[s]" sensitive data before it is sent to a third-party LLM or before a malicious response is shown to your user.

Fulfilling the "Robustness & Cybersecurity" Mandate

This is not just a "nice to have" security feature. This is a core compliance requirement.

The EU AI Act, which we dissected in Part 2, explicitly mandates that high-risk systems must have "appropriate levels of... robustness, and cybersecurity". The NIST AI RMF includes "security and resilience" as a key characteristic of trustworthy AI.

These new LLM threats—prompt injection, data leakage—are direct violations of these "robustness" and "cybersecurity" mandates.

Therefore, an "AI Firewall" is not just a security tool for your CISO. It is a critical compliance control for your GC and CCO. You cannot be compliant without it.

Conclusion

Securing your AI is a core part of "robustness" under the EU AI Act and "security" under NIST. You have governed your models, and you have monitored them for accidental failures. Now, you have secured them from intentional attacks.
